24 hours of racing! That’s right, teams from some of the biggest names in autosport will have spent an entire day racing around the Circuit de la Sarthe at Le Mans in France on the 16-17th of June.

Over the last two decades, technology in the field of number plates has progressed in leaps and bounds. Once, where a driver had to have a certain piece of kit to use a tollway, or display a ticket to park, the rise of ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) means that much of the work is taken out of driver’s hands. But how does the technology actually work? We’ve taken a look.

At present, driving lessons can only occur off motorways, ostensibly as a safety precaution for other drivers. However, collision data shows that drivers who recently gained their license are up to eight times more likely to be involved in a fatal accident on British roads than drivers from other demographics.

There are some restrictions on letter and number combinations. Germany’s recent history, specifically in relation to the Nazi state, means that some are totally off limits.

We drive in a world full of rules - how fast we drive, how we navigate intersections, how we behave while driving. Most of the rules we have to abide by seem fairly straight-forward and there’s no question why we abide by them.
