DVLA auction, September 2023

The top 5 number plates sold at DVLA Auction in September 2023

DVLA's September 2023 auction was an online event. The sale ran from Wednesday 6th September to Tuesday 12th September. All prices in this report include fees and taxes.

Cream of the crop

Top seller this time was 911 OG at £64,408, one of several registrations in the auction that would have appealed to Porsche 911 fans. The appeal of 911 OG is clear to see, but we were a little surprised it made quite as much as it did.

Registration 911 OG

In second place was FER 458A (£38,844), which we presume is a reference to the Ferrari 458 Speciale A. Following closely in third place was another 911 plate, THE 911K at £38,600. Fourth and fifth positions were taken by 14 YTH (£32,193) and 11 HSD (£32,180) respectively. We suspect that the appeal of 14 YTH may well lie in its resemblance to the Arabic name Layth.

Old favourites

This auction was another interruption to the winning streak of 'O' registrations that has dominated recent events. 8888 O (£31,037) was the highest placed 'O' registration. It may or may not have any particular significance for the purchaser but it is certainly an eye-catching plate that would look great on any car.

Registration 8888 O

Meanwhile, 760 O (£27,057) and 54 OO (£26,415) were the closest rivals in that category.

Number plates that don't represent a word, name or message, but which simply have strong visual impact, have also been popular at recent auctions. Symmetry in particular is a big hit with buyers and at an all-in price of £15,501, OO05 OOO was a perfect example.

Names

There were quite a few bargains amongst the name registrations sold, and we would expect to see a few of these go back on the market at higher prices before long.

Amongst the best representations on offer were KA73 LYN, which sold for just £6,513, ES73 LLE (£6,333) and CU22 RAN (£4,715). SF51 NGH (£17,054) was one of several 'Singh' plates to have come out of the 51 series, and OO73 OND (£14,204) was a great find for any fan of the famous spy.

Registration OO73 OND for a fan of the spy?

Words

C411 NOW (£6,513) would be a great plate for a business, someone with a connection to telesales or call centres. NOT 84D (£16,014) is exactly how we would describe the performance of this one. We presume that a musician bought FLU 7E (£9,800) but others were harder to guess. Who would buy AP05 TLE at £8,272? A clergyman perhaps?

PA71 ENT (£7,784) could be meant in the medical context, or it could describe someone who is happy to wait for something. VE73 RAN (£10,429) is, perhaps, less of a mystery. A great plate for any veteran car fan, or for an ex-military person wanting to show pride in their service to the country.

Cars

Other probable Porsche purchases included 911 XXV (£15,334) and 911 ANA (£12,920), while, presumably, 770 DBS was bought by someone lucky enough to own both an Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate and the money to pay £25,901 to equip it with a terrific number plate!

The September auctions saw 2467 numbers sold and 33 numbers unsold. Bidders spent a total of £7,324,009, with £6,857,780 going to the government in revenue.

The next DVLA auction will be a live venue auction and will be held at Stratford Manor Hotel, Warwick Road, CV37 0PY on the 18th, 19th and 20th October 2023. This is expected to be the last live venue auction, with all future auctions taking place online.

The role of DVLA

Car registrations and number plates, including personalised number plates, in the UK, are the responsibility of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, usually known as the DVLA. It issues new registrations twice a year and also maintains the central database that records details of all vehicles licensed to drive on UK roads, along with their keeper and registration information.

Regtransfers works closely with DVLA to complete registration transfers as quickly and efficiently as possible. Regtransfers is a DVLA-registered supplier of personal car registrations and number plates and is listed on the DVLA Registrations website. All number plates supplied by Regtransfers comply with DVLA's prescribed standards and regulations.

DVLA administers all UK registration transfers and issues updated registration documents when the registration number of a car is changed, or when a registration is removed from a vehicle and placed on a retention document in accordance with the DVLA Retention Scheme.

DVLA is a registered trade mark of the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. Regtransfers is not affiliated with the DVLA or DVLA Personalised Registrations. Regtransfers is a recognised reseller of unissued Government stock.

Number plate regulations

When a car is on the road, it is an offence to display number plates bearing any number other than the vehicle's officially recorded registration number. If you purchase a private registration, learn how to transfer private plates before displaying the new number.

All registration number plates displayed on UK vehicles must comply with the official number plate regulations. DVLA oversees enforcement of number plates display regulations and maintains a register of approved manufacturers and retailers of vehicle number plates.

Regtransfers is not part of, and is not formally affiliated with DVLA.
