DVLA auction, June 2023

The top 5 number plates sold at DVLA Auction in June 2023

The DVLA's June auction was a live venue event held at the Casa Hotel in Chesterfield from Wednesday 21st June to Friday 23rd June 2023.

If DVLA sticks to its current plan, this will be the last but one live venue auction. After the final live event in October, It is intended that all future DVLA auctions will be held online.

The winner

Once again, the star of the show was an 'O' registration. Selling for an all-in price of £73,268, 51 O resumed the run of 'O' numbers that have dominated recent auctions. If it hadn't been for the strong showing of excellent 5 PS in May's auction, this would have been the seventh in the 'O' series to take top spot. We said in our last auction report that we expected the 'O's to fight back and 51 O did exactly that. This series is certainly very popular with bidders.

Registration 51 O

Honourable mentions

Completing the top five were 7 OOR (£34,491), 9 YT (£32,950), OO08 OOO (£32,180) and WIG 1 (£31,024). While the follically challenged WIG 1 has the obvious benefits of the number 1 and the perfect spelling of a word, the others were, perhaps, less obvious at a glance. OO08 OOO is of a kind we have seen do well before. This kind of symmetry, consisting of just two basic character shapes, is always visually striking. Although it screams 'private number plate', it gives very little away and is sure to get onlookers guessing.

Registration OO08 OOO

Names, words and phrases

Representations of names varied in quality of visual effect. Among those we noticed were: ARJ 5N (£15,745), D21 ANA (£13,177), ROB 31E (£11,764), J41 SON (£9,710), DAV 31D (£9,068), WAT 90N (£7,527) and C41 ROL (£7,399).

Registration ARJ 5N

SYR 11A (£23,192) was a nice example of an imperfect representation that is still instantly obvious despite its slight deviation from "Syria", while M411 CTY was a nice result for a Manchester City fan at £5,473.

Registration M411 CTY

We'll finish with NOT 284D (£11,636), which may not be visually perfect but it's certainly not bad!

Registration NOT 284D

The June auctions saw 998 numbers sold and two numbers unsold. Bidders spent a total of £4,600,997, with £4,305,220 going to the government in revenue.

DVLA's next auction will be another online, timed event and will take place on Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 1st August 2023.

The role of DVLA

Car registrations and number plates, including personalised number plates, in the UK, are the responsibility of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, usually known as the DVLA. It issues new registrations twice a year and also maintains the central database that records details of all vehicles licensed to drive on UK roads, along with their keeper and registration information.

Regtransfers works closely with DVLA to complete registration transfers as quickly and efficiently as possible. Regtransfers is a DVLA-registered supplier of personal car registrations and number plates and is listed on the DVLA Registrations website. All number plates supplied by Regtransfers comply with DVLA's prescribed standards and regulations.

DVLA administers all UK registration transfers and issues updated registration documents when the registration number of a car is changed, or when a registration is removed from a vehicle and placed on a retention document in accordance with the DVLA Retention Scheme.

DVLA is a registered trade mark of the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. Regtransfers is not affiliated with the DVLA or DVLA Personalised Registrations. Regtransfers is a recognised reseller of unissued Government stock.

Number plate regulations

When a car is on the road, it is an offence to display number plates bearing any number other than the vehicle's officially recorded registration number. If you purchase a private registration, learn how to transfer private plates before displaying the new number.

All registration number plates displayed on UK vehicles must comply with the official number plate regulations. DVLA oversees enforcement of number plates display regulations and maintains a register of approved manufacturers and retailers of vehicle number plates.

Regtransfers is not part of, and is not formally affiliated with DVLA.
