We weren't unduly surprised when we heard about the sale of the registration plate "R" at auction in Hong Kong, even though the hammer went down at an eye-watering HK$ 25.5 million (approximately £2,632,000).

When a journalist writing about the proposed auction of the Scottish private plate HS 0 asked us to estimate what price the plate could achieve, it led us to consider single and double-digit registrations that were created specially for use by local authorities and the issues surrounding their sale.
The DVLA's first auction of 2023 took place from 11th - 17th January. It was an online auction.
