What checks should you do before purchasing a used vehicle?

Used car checks

Getting started

As a potential buyer of a used vehicle, you want to make sure you're getting a good deal. While a used car may be more affordable than a brand-new one, it's important to be diligent in checking the vehicle thoroughly. You can find all the vehicle’s key information through vehicle check services that will conduct an HPI check, which is a comprehensive vehicle history check that can tell you a lot about a car’s history, including its ownership and number plate information. Here are some of the other key things you need to look out for when physically inspecting the vehicle in question.

Exterior condition

It is important to look for any signs of rust or damage to the body, including dents or scratches. You should also make sure all the doors, windows, and boot open and close smoothly.

Interior condition

Check for any signs of wear and tear, including stains, tears, or cracks on the seats and dashboard. Test all the electronic components, such as the radio, air conditioning, and powered windows.

Tyres

Check the tread depth and make sure the tyres are evenly worn. Uneven wear could indicate an alignment issue.

Under the bonnet

If you don't know much about engines, try to take someone with you who is more familiar with the things you should look out for and who can offer advice. Check the engine oil level and make sure it's not dirty or low. Look for any leaks or corrosion on the engine block and transmission.

Test drive

Take the car for a test drive and pay attention to how it handles. Listen for any strange noises or vibrations, and test the brakes and steering.

Vehicle history report

Obtain a vehicle history report to check for any accidents or major repairs. This can also provide an insight into the car’s previous owners and its maintenance history. You can obtain this through trusted vehicle check services.

How to transfer a private number plate to a used car?

If you have a personalised number plate either on retention or on another vehicle, you may wish to transfer the registration to your new car. However, you need to wait for the vehicle log book (V5C) to arrive by post, as this will officially show that you are the registered keeper of the vehicle.

You can apply to assign the personalised registration to the car online or by post. To transfer the private plate by post, you will need to send your completed V750 certificate of entitlement or V778 retention document, along with the log book, to the DVLA. Please be mindful that If you already have a personal number plate on your vehicle that you want to keep, you’ll have to retain the registration first.

In conclusion, doing vital checks before buying a used vehicle and assigning a private plate to that vehicle are important steps that should not be overlooked. Before purchasing a used vehicle, it is crucial to conduct a thorough inspection to confirm that the vehicle is in good condition. This will help to avoid any potential issues down the line. By taking the time to do these vital checks, you can maximise your chances of making a safe and sound investment in your vehicle and enjoying the benefits of a private number plate without any legal or financial repercussions.

The role of DVLA

Car registrations and number plates, including personalised number plates, in the UK, are the responsibility of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, usually known as the DVLA. It issues new registrations twice a year and also maintains the central database that records details of all vehicles licensed to drive on UK roads, along with their keeper and registration information.

Regtransfers works closely with DVLA to complete registration transfers as quickly and efficiently as possible. Regtransfers is a DVLA-registered supplier of personal car registrations and number plates and is listed on the DVLA Registrations website. All number plates supplied by Regtransfers comply with DVLA's prescribed standards and regulations.

DVLA administers all UK registration transfers and issues updated registration documents when the registration number of a car is changed, or when a registration is removed from a vehicle and placed on a retention document in accordance with the DVLA Retention Scheme.

DVLA is a registered trade mark of the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. Regtransfers is not affiliated with the DVLA or DVLA Personalised Registrations. Regtransfers is a recognised reseller of unissued Government stock.

Number plate regulations

When a car is on the road, it is an offence to display number plates bearing any number other than the vehicle's officially recorded registration number. If you purchase a private registration, learn how to transfer private plates before displaying the new number.

All registration number plates displayed on UK vehicles must comply with the official number plate regulations. DVLA oversees enforcement of number plates display regulations and maintains a register of approved manufacturers and retailers of vehicle number plates.

Regtransfers is not part of, and is not formally affiliated with DVLA.
