DVLA's November 2024 auction was an online event that ran from Wednesday 20th to Tuesday 26th November 2024.
As always, prices quoted in this report include fees and taxes.
November's top 5
November's top five most expensive lots was topped by 47 O, which sold for £89,973. It's been a while since an O plate topped the rankings, but we did see a run of several auctions in 2023 where O plates took the top spot, or second place. Good examples are always popular.
In joint second place this month were 160 G and 296 S, both at £32,321. 296 S would have been a fine plate for a Ferrari Dino owner.
Fourth place went to 70 OOO at £30,267. Again, registrations featuring a combination of multiple Os and 0s have proved very popular at auctions in the past, and we usually see at least one notable example.
Completing the top five was 711 H at £27,044.
Words
81 OW (Blow) at £20,252 was the highest placed word registration. We choose to interpret 7 UCK as a possible representation of 'Tuck' or 'Luck'. Whatever was in the mind of the buyer prompted them to part with £17,774.
NUD 3S (Nudes) at £14,987 may have been purchased by someone with an artistic leaning. We're not sure whether or not the buyer of USA 848Y really was a 'USA baby', but they paid £10,827 for the number.
SH07 TER would make a very reasonable representation of 'Shooter' or 'Shorter' at a very reasonable £7,823, while GE74 WAY ('Getaway') was a steal at £6,513. DOC 703R was a surprisingly effective 'Doctor' plate, and a surprisingly decent bargain at £3,945.
Names
The nation's capital (and anyone named after it) were represented nicely by LON 60N at £18,647. JOO 5H (£17,568) may have been purchased as a 'Josh' registration, but several less expensive plates offered less ambiguous name representations.
MD51 NGH (£13,446) provided a timely reminder that there are still 'Singh' plates to be had by those quick enough to bid. If we were to offer a prize for the name most frequently depicted on number plates, Singh would be a serious contender.
Your humble blogger's pick for the best name depiction in this month's auction has to go to NA74 LYA. The modest price of £12,933 can probably be attributed to low competition, as the Russian name Natalya isn't currently one of the most common in the UK.
Other names spotted included MRH 454N ('Mr Hasan') at £8,978, REU 183N ('Reuben') at £7,797, SOF 141X ('Sofia 1X') at £6,847 and AR73 HUR ('Arthur') at £6,513.
Cars
Car references were available, as always. We've already mentioned 296 S above, which may have alluded to Ferrari, but there were more. 911 JRH (£11,148), 911 ABS (£7,797), 911 CSB (£6,012), 911 DJS and 911 PVS (both at £5,550), 911 SLT (£5,229) and P911 DKR (£4,908) could easily all have been bought by Porsche owners.
WAG 90N, at £13,511, could work on many vehicles, but especially a Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
Miscellaneous
Another theme we see again and again amongst auction numbers is that of symmetry. There are usually a few plates whose appeal is clearly just visual, with no particular hidden meaning, and those displaying Some kind of symmetry in their characters are amongst the most regular.
This month we saw OO06 OOO (£16,361) was another of many that uses several X, O or 0 characters to provide the effect. If you glance back through our previous auction reports, you will see this kind of arrangement appear frequently.
