F 1: The UK’s Most Expensive Private Registration

In January 2008, F 1 became the UK’s most expensive personal registration when Afzal Kahn, of exclusive automotive stylists Project Kahn, purchased the number. It had been owned by Essex County Council, who decided to sell it in order to raise money for the education and training of young drivers. Hundreds of young and recently passed drivers will be given help to take the Pass Plus test, which gives advanced training in driving techniques. The test, designed by the Driver Standards Agency, gives youngsters knowledge of how to drive on motorways and in poor weather conditions.

Afzal, a regular client of Regtransfers.co.uk, and his company were featured in the New Year issue of our free magazine, Regtransfers.co.uk: The World of Personal Number Plates, just prior to his record-breaking purchase.

There had been much speculation that F 1 would be bought by someone with links to Formula 1 motor racing but Project Kahn, who specialise in redesigning and customising exclusive production vehicles from Aston Martin, Range Rover, Mercedes and others, beat all other interested parties and acquired the coveted mark at a truly spectacular price. The £440k tag smashed the UK record by over £100,000. The previous record holder was M 1 which sold for £331,000 in 2006.
