Car Registrations and Numberplates Information

Car registrations and numberplates were introduced under the provisions of the Motor Car Act 1903. All motor vehicles used on the roads after 1 January 1904 had to be registered with the appropriate local authority. In fact most authorities started issuing car registrations towards the end of 1903. The first number registered in London was A 1, to Earl Russell who reportedly camped out all night to secure it!

Personal or cherished numberplates can now sell for more than the average priced house. On 10th December 1993 an anonymous buyer paid £235,000 for 'K1 NGS'. This astonishing figure was achieved at auction in just over two minutes! Other registrations which sold for impressive prices are: '1A' £202,000; 'S1 NGH' £108,000; '1 RR' £106,000; 'G1 LLY' £87,500; 'P1 LOT' £82,500 & 'ELV 1S' £75,000.

Thankfully, few car registrations are so expensive. Many start from below £250, so it isn't surprising that personal number plates are becoming increasingly popular.

Who Buys Personal Car Registrations and Numberplates?
Traditionally many celebrities have bought personalised numberplates for promotional purposes: Liverpool striker Emile Heskey: 'HE 51 KEY', for example. However, due to the huge variety of plates available at very reasonable prices, anyone can find a plate they can afford. Popular choices are names, initials, and words such as: 'CAT 1'; 'S4 NDY'; '1 UCY'; 'T6 NYA'; '1 EO'; 'C1 LLA'; 'M4 TCH'; 'B1 RDY' and '50 NGS'.
