Following the abolition of the rather quaint but archaic road tax disc, the next ‘analog’ item – the ‘counterpart’ driving licence – has now reached the end of its useful life. But, you may need to take a little care before dispatching the paper document and it’s crude plastic wallet:
The plastic photo card was introduced in 1998, but you don’t have to have one unless you are replacing a lost or invalid paper one. So, don’t destroy the paper unless you have the plastic. You should also be aware that some foriegn car rental firms still require your paper licence, unless you apply to the DVLA online for a special code.
