How our number plate auction works

Our number plate auction works much like other auction sites. We differ slightly in that buying a registration requires the completion and filing of DVLA paperwork and we handle all that for you.

Listing a registration

Selling a number plate in our auction is perfect for simplifying an otherwise complicated transfer procedure. It is quick and simple and it costs as little as £10 plus VAT.

Sign in to your Regtransfers account or sign up for one
Request a free valuation on the number plate you would like to list
Once we have valued your number plate, click on the 'List in auction' button
Set a starting price, reserve and any options you'd like
Once you list your number plate it will appear in our 'Coming Soon' section for 5 days. After 5 days have passed the auction will then start and will last for 7 days
When your registration is won, we will send you an email to confirm this
Upload the documents requested by email into your account
Receive your money by bank transfer or cheque

Listing fees

You pay two fees. First the listing fee to sell your registration in our auction (from £10+VAT) and when sold the selling fee (a percentage of the sale value). Full details can be found on our Auction fees page.

Bidders have an excellent opportunity to purchase great registrations that rarely come to market. The bidding process is very simple to follow and easy to understand.

Auctioneer's fees

There are no auction fees to pay when you win. A deposit of 10% of the winning bid (or £100 whichever is the greater) will be taken and then you pay the balance plus the £80 Transfer Fee, and VAT if applicable, within seven days.

The role of DVLA

Car registrations and number plates, including personalised number plates, in the UK, are the responsibility of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency, usually known as the DVLA. It issues new registrations twice a year and also maintains the central database that records details of all vehicles licensed to drive on UK roads, along with their keeper and registration information.

Regtransfers works closely with DVLA to complete registration transfers as quickly and efficiently as possible. Regtransfers is a DVLA-registered supplier of personal car registrations and number plates and is listed on the DVLA Registrations website. All number plates supplied by Regtransfers comply with DVLA's prescribed standards and regulations.

DVLA administers all UK registration transfers and issues updated registration documents when the registration number of a car is changed, or when a registration is removed from a vehicle and placed on a retention document in accordance with the DVLA Retention Scheme.

Number plate regulations

When a car is on the road, it is an offence to display number plates bearing any number other than the vehicle's officially recorded registration number. If you purchase a private registration, learn how to transfer private plates before displaying the new number.

All registration number plates displayed on UK vehicles must comply with the official number plate regulations. DVLA oversees enforcement of number plates display regulations and maintains a register of approved manufacturers and retailers of vehicle number plates.
