UK's Cheekiest Plate?

The car registration plate PEN 15 has been turning heads everywhere it goes.

PEN 15 is owned by Regtransfers.co.uk, and is currently displayed on our distinctive promotional Smart car. The plate's passing resemblance to a certain word is quite obvious, but it is a genuine, officially issued registration. Although the government agency that assigns numbers makes a point of not issuing character combinations which may cause offence, it evidently has a sense of humour, and, commendably, is able to distinguish harmless fun from more sinister issues. The registration H8 GAY made headlines earlier this year when it was withdrawn after complaints that it could be seen as conveying a homophobic message ("hate gay").

We have been very happy to note that PEN 15 is raising smiles wherever it goes. People point and grin, wave and very often take pictures with their phones. Fortunately, everyone realises it is just a bit of a giggle - a harmless and amusing visual coincidence.

The Regtransfers.co.uk website has even started a section devoted to the cheeky plate and its adventures, and we have been astonished to find that people are emailing links to the PEN 15 pages to their friends, and circulating copies of some of the humorous images we have of the plate!

PEN 15 is also acquiring quite a celebrity fan base, with TV quizmaster Chris Tarrant and veteran DJ David Hamilton having posed for amusing photos featuring the plate.

Football Boss Scores Record-Breaking Number Plate

Regtransfers.co.uk is celebrating the sale of the prestigious VIP 1 personalised number plate from the company's vast stock of exclusive car registrations. Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich paid a record sum for the plate that was created for Pope John Paul II.

At £285,000 the sale of VIP 1 sets a new record for the highest price paid for a UK number plate. It is significantly more than the prices commanded by previous contenders which have included GS 1 (£258,000) K1 NGS (£235,000) and 51 NGH (£254,000).

Regtransfers.co.uk did recently approach Mr Abramovich to see if he wanted to purchase the mighty X 1 (representing the Roman numeral for eleven) to signify his football team, but it seems that the Chelsea top man didn't have the £500,000 asking price for that truly iconic registration to hand. Instead he opted for the less expensive, but nearly as exclusive, VIP 1 with its intriguing and historical papal connection - VIP 1 was created by the Irish government for the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1979.

Anyone hoping to break Mr Abramovich's spectacular record for the most expensive luxury number plate may wish to consider X 1, E 1, or V 1, all of which are still available for purchase at the modest price of £500,000 each. Although a Regtransfers.co.uk spokesperson said, "We may offer a discount if someone would like to buy the set of three..."

Number plate enthusiasts were out in force again at the last DVLA auction, held on 27th, 28th and 29th June 2006 at Tankersley Manor, Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
