The Best Yet
The recent sale of F 1 to businessman Afzal Kahn for £440,625 made headlines in the UK, and rightly so - it was a spectacular sale at a record-breaking price. Meanwhile, just weeks later, an even more extravagant purchase received rather less media coverage in Britain...
A bidder at an Emirates Auction sale in Abu Dhabi bought the ultimate registration number: simply the single digit "1". From previous experience of the enthusiasm shown by United Arab Emirates fans of what they call "distinguished number plates" we knew to expect some high prices. The auction house in question hit headlines in 2007 by setting a world record for the highest price ever paid for a private vehicle registration when the number 5 sold for £3.5 million. As then, Guinness World Records were in attendance at this most recent sale. Expectations for a a new record were high. Emirates Auctions did not disappoint. The coveted number 1 was bought for an astounding £7.25 million.
With the "ultimate" registration sold, one begins to wonder when, or even if, this latest record can be exceeded. But then, when one realises that Abu Dhabi number plates run in series, and that there have already been five series, each of which began with an "ultimate" single digit number 1, well, then one also realises that history sometimes repeats, and anything seems possible.
