O What a Year!
2009 was an interesting year in many ways. For us, one of the biggest surprises was the fact that the popularity of private car registrations was relatively unaffected by the extraordinary financial climate. People have continued to buy their dream numbers.
The auctions also provided us with some excitement. During 2009 a whole series of two-character "O" plates went under the hammer. 1 O, 2 O, 3 O, 4 O, 5 O and 6 O were sold at separate auctions held throughout the year. Interest was high, and competition lively. One determined purchaser must have found the format particularly appealing, as he purchased three of the six registrations in the series! 0 What a Pair!
Of course, the numeric character for zero is identical to the letter "O" in the official number plate font. A fact that provides us with the most tenuous of links to our next story.
The Lord Provost of Edinburgh has recently reduced the number of civic limousines he operates to two. His green credentials have been further enhanced by his choice of eco-friendly saloons.
However, in the process of shedding vehicles he was astute enough to ensure that he did not lose two outstanding car registrations. The single-letter zero registration marks S 0 and G 0 are surely worth a great deal of money. If the Lord Provost had let those G 0 without spotting their potential he would, no doubt, have had some explaining to do.
