Stirling Takes a Tumble

Motor racing legend, Stirling Moss, has received severe injuries after falling down a lift shaft at his London home.

The eighty year old Formula One driver took a staggering three floor drop after the door opened in error, but thankfully survived the fall despite suffering extensive injuries, including two broken ankles.

An ambulance was summoned to his Mayfair home and he was immediately taken to the Royal London Hospital where he underwent surgery and is recovering well, according to family sources.

The personal lift is just one of numerous 'gadgets' fitted in Stirling's house, which he built on a former bombsite in 1962. There are a host of remote control features which allow him, for example, to fill a bath on the third floor, to exactly the correct level and temperature, from a control panel in a ground-floor living room.

Elsewhere, there are all manner of sliding partitions, moveable ceilings and a powered serving tray from the kitchen to the dining room. Even the toilet seats are electrically heated for optimum comfort!

Although a household name, after a succession of 16 Grand Prix wins in the 1950s and early 60s, Moss never actually achieved the Formula One championship. He finally retired after spectacularly crashing his car at the Goodwood racing circuit in 1962.

Stirling, a big fan of personal number plates, recently granted Regtransfers.co.uk an exclusive interview for the magazine, The World of Personal Number Plates, in which he reveals many interesting details about his life and career.
