New Car Sales Plummet in September
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed that new car sales have plummeted further in the month of September.
Despite the release of the new '58' number plates, September sales fell by 21.2%, making it the worst September since 1999.
The SMMT said that the country's economic problems have knocked consumer confidence. Rising unemployment, and recent negative news in the banking and housing sectors has resulted in a major drop in sales as potential car buyers tighten their belts.
Theresa Villiers, the Shadow Transport Secretary, said, "These figures are disastrous news for the car industry...Cancelling a new car purchase will often be one of the first casualties when families are feeling the pinch."
Statistics show that those who are able to purchase a new car are switching to more fuel-efficient models, such as Fiats and Minis, which have a lower rate of tax. As a result, manufacturers, who depend on luxery saloons and 4x4s for profits, are extremely concerned about the months ahead.
The SMMT is urging the Government to take immediate action in order to restore confidence.
