Number Plates Crime tackled in South Africa
Like so many other countries, South Africa has encountered problems with number plate crime. In an effort to combat it a number of measures are currently being considered by the Mpumalanga Department of Roads and Transport. Some of these measures parallel action already taken by the authorities in the UK; for example, there will be a central accreditation system for number plates suppliers, and new plates will become available which will "self destruct" if criminals should attempt to remove them from vehicles by force.
It has also been suggested that the plates for different classes of vehicles might be colour coded; a move which would aid identification while making life still more difficult for criminals.
The public has been invited to offer its comments and suggestions regarding the proposed changes.
