Ugandan Government Takes Control Over Private Plate Chaos

Commissioner general, Allen Kagina is convinced that this will help to streamline the process of monitoring the two private contractors, Arnold Brooklyn and GM Tumpecollen, who are jointly responsible for issuing and producing licence plates for the country.
Kagina considers that, "Letting these companies operate outside was the main loophole, which caused all these forgeries," and added that, "the decision was taken in May, after an internal audit discovered that fake number-plates had been issued".
In a recent swoop, over 160 counterfeit plates were discovered. They are all believed to have been issued during a six-month period from August 2008 until February 2009.
It is also suspected that there may be thousands of motorcycles displaying fraudulent registrations
So far, 400 vehicles have been impounded on suspicion of displaying fake plates.
