Italy Joins the Number Plate Club
Recent statistics have revealed that personalised number plates are more popular than ever before in Italy. The figures show that the sales of personalised number plates in the second half of 2008 were higher than they have ever been. Italian number plates are a new phenomenon and are especially popular in the north of the country, in particular in Turin.
Over 5000 number plates were ordered as Christmas presents in October, November and December 2009. The vast majority of these number plates were bought by those with high performance cars. The Italians are well known, of course, for their sports models such Ferrari and Lamborghini. More than 600 plates were ordered for the arrival of the stylish Fiat 500
The increase in the sales of number plates in expected to continue. Ms. Eli Marini, from a popular number plate sales company in Turin said: ‘Our sales more than tripled in the last half of last year. We did not expect it but were only too happy to welcome the rise in sales."
Footballers playing in the Italian Series A and B football leagues purchased more than 300 number plates between them the survey goes on to reveal. All were for high end luxury and sports cars. Footballer, Kaka was reported to have bought a plate worth more then £60,000.
Although there was a drop in sales in the first month of 2009, compared to the previous December and November, sales figures were still up 13.58% on the same month last year. This trend is expected to continue over the next few months and Several auctions are planned between now and the summer in order to take advantage of the recent rise in sales. Two have also been organised for the Mezzigiorno region to entice the residents there to buy personalised plates for their cars.
