Hong Kong's Number Plates Going Strong
Personalised number plates are proving to be popular in Hong Kong as the unusual car registration, 1234, was sold for £28,609.
At the government auction, which took place yesterday (Sunday, 2nd November), a total of 280 eye-catching private registrations went under the hammer, raising just under £215,000.
Hong Kong has been one of the worst hit by the economic crisis. However, Sunday's auction shows that number plates are still generating a large amount of interest. Although around 30 of the 280 registration numbers did not quite reach their reserve prices, the auction was clearly a success.
Hong Kong first introduced number plates auctions in 1973 and these take place, on average, twice a month. However, the first personalised number plates auction did not take place until September 16th, 2006. The minimum price for these plates is HK$5000, which is just under £400.
