India's GL/WB Number Plates Update
The fight for Gorkhaland, situated in West Bengal, India, to become its own state, continues as citizens of the area continue to show their protest by altering their number plates from 'WB' (West Bengal) to 'GL' (Gorkhaland).
Gorkhaland's president (GJM) has encouraged Gorkhas to alter their number plates, as well as signposts in order to present their political views. Many Gorkhas have tirelessly fought for Gorkhaland and, with the GJM's support, have finally taken a more radical step.
However, following a transport strike, headed by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions(CITU), the GJM has partially postponed some of the agitation. The strike, which was withdrawn after the Darjeeling district's administration warned it would cause more tension, had some effect as the GJM ordered commercial vehicles and taxis to refrain from sporting 'GL' car registrations.
However, the president is still supporting the use of the registration plates on private cars and two-wheelers, even though CITU supporters have damaged many of these vehicles.
It is hoped that upcoming talks in Delhi will help to calm this political unrest.
