Update On National Flags Issue

It is hoped that, following the recent uproar over the display of national flags on vehicle registration plates, the government is finally taking notice of this baffling issue.

Regtransfers.co.uk reported last Friday, 24th October that the DVLA had stated in writing its intention to change the regulations in 2001. The proposed alterations would include the recognition of the Scottish, English and Welsh national flags, as well as the European Union option, which is the only one currently included in the number plates regulations.

Seven years later, these alterations are still yet to be made, despite the DVLA insisting that the flags are allowed. However, because the official regulations do not recognise them, the DVLA admitted that law enforcement agencies may still prosecute if they so wish.

This regulatory grey area has sparked much anger and frustration from the public and motoring organisations, as well as from the media and MPs, who are now putting intense pressure on the government to sort out this unacceptable issue.

Questions are still being asked. Fined motorists are asking what course of action is available to them, in light of being given misleading information from both the DVLA and the government. A question that is also being asked is: Why did the government deem it appropriate to ask law enforcement agencies to turn a blind eye to national flags, rather than provide concrete rules?

While these question are still being asked, it is believed that, due to motorists' concerns being voiced through MPs in Parliament, the message is finally getting through to the government and the rules should finally change. However, at the current time, it is unclear how long drivers will have to wait.
