Campaigner Sells Plate to Cover Costs

A Sunderland market trader, who campaigns vigorously against injustices in parking legislation, is to sell his prized number plate in order to finance his activities.

Neil Herron is involved in an on-going legal battle with Sunderland City Council, claiming that they have issued thousands of unlawful parking tickets as a result of flaws in the regulations.

After already re-mortgaging his own house to raise funds for his campaign, the market trader is putting his three-year-old Nissan Navara on the market. Not only does the car have two highly appropriate yellow lines painted down each side, but along with it goes a very special number plate.

Neil purchased the registration F1 NED through Regtransfers and now hopes that it will add considerable value to the sale. The proceeds will go towards the £80,000 he needs to meet his legal costs so far.

The main thrust of Mr Herron's grievance against the system is that many parking tickets are totally invalid because any Controlled Parking Zone must, according to the law, be marked with yellow lines, except where parking is provided.

Sunderland City Council are, naturally, contesting the case and a judicial review at The High Court in London will deliver its verdict in May.

Whilst it is sad that Neil is reluctantly parting with an exceptionally good registration, it makes the point that the personalised plates can provide both a hedge against financial uncertainty and an excellent savings option.
