By Royal Appointment

HRH Prince Andrew, The Duke of York is not best known for his lack of ostentation and extravagance. So it was little surprise to see him enjoying his latest gas-guzzling toy, a £200,000 Bentley Arnage.

The limousine does an impressive 180mph (although exactly where this specification can be verified is not clear) at a less than impressive 10mpg.

Environmentalists are, naturally, appalled that a member of the Royal Family should be endorsing such a eco-unfriendly mode of transportation. One source went so far as to describe the Duke as "breathtakingly out of touch." and added, "The Royals are meant to set an example but Andrew just doesn't get it."

Andrew's older brother, The Prince of Wales, also has a predictable appetite for top of the range makes but, to his credit, Charles does at least nod in the direction of the green lobby by running his vehicles on bio-fuels, often manufactured from recycled cooking oil and even surplus white wine from his own estates.

The Duke cannot, however, be criticised for his choice of number plate. The inconsequential prefix and numerals of the recently acquired registration are nicely rounded off with a subtle 'DOY' suffix.

Nice touch, Sir. A least you got that right.
