Top Numbers Up for Grabs in Latest Plate Auction

It's auction time again and the latest of the DVLA's regular events takes place over the three days from Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th October at the Dormy House Hotel, Broadway, Worcestershire.

The government sponsored sales are traditionally hosted at prestigious venues around the UK and this time is no exception. Dormy House and Conference Centre is a tastefully converted 17th century farmhouse lying in the heart of the picturesque Cotswolds.

A total of 1600 previously unissued registrations are to be offered with reserves starting at just £190 for 3 PSN. Dateless three-letter marks like this, although having limited appeal as popular initials, could be expected to command a market value well in excess of £5000.

Moving up the scale, there are a whole raft of attractive 'number one' plates on offer such as 1 NTG and 1 TJL, both of which would match the initials of well over 5000 people in this country. Many common names are also represented by registrations such as JO51 NGH, BU55 SBY, COH 8N, C111 YDE, and DAV 9S with starting prices all below the £1000 mark.

Inevitably, one or two truly spectacular numbers are liekly to hog the limelight. This time it will be the turn of 5 O and 2 X to fight it out with the favourite 2 X attracting a starting price of £10k. 5 O is the latest in the 'O' series to be issued for the first time this year. Its siblings, 1 O, 2 O, 3 O and 4 O, all raised highly respectable, if not record-breaking, sums earlier this year with 1 O naturally attracting the highest price of over £210k.

The nature of cherished registrations as investment rather than consumer commodities has largely managed to isolate them from the worst of the recent stresses on the economy. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how these latest releases fare in the light of increasingly optimistic predictions by the financial pundits.
