High Hopes Pinned on Didcot Plate

An Oxford man is banking on a significant return for a plate he bought seven years ago. Marc Jones, 36, made the speculative purchase at the same time as buying C15 TRA ('ASTRA') for his Vauxhall Astra. The plate in question is the rather splendid D10 COT which, in the somewhat ambiguous approved number plate font, easily passes for the name of his neighbouring town of Didcot.

Marc has no particular affiliation with the area. Indeed he has not had occasion to even visit the place for many years, although it lies barely ten miles from his home. He was, however, aware of planned building developments and expansion and considered that Didcot's profile was likely to grow fast. With this in mind, the chance to acquire D10 COT for just £650 was an opportunity not to be missed.

Interestingly, the DVLA, who are obliged to warn us of the evils of mis-spacing plates, do themselves put a premium on such examples when sold at their own auctions. A practice which a cynic might view as, at the very least, hypocritical, if not an actual incitement to bend the rules.

D10 COT, which has not been registered with any vehicle since it was issued, is currently being offered on a well-known internet auction site with a starting price of £1000.

The Mayor of Didcot, Margaret Turner, adds her support to the venture, saying, "I'm sure somebody out there will buy it. It will be interesting to look out to see who is our number one resident and fits it to their car."

Residents of other towns, such as S7 OKE, SUT 70N, S10 UGH, DOV 3R and EXE 73R will be able to express their own civic pride with these examples of personalised plates currently available from Regtransfers.co.uk.
