A Family Affair
In the Atlantic coast state of Delaware, USA, Frank Vassallo IV has just paid $675,000 - nearly £412,000 - for the number '6'.
Vassall revealed that he would have been prepared to have gone as high as a round $1m more the plate.
In the USA, 'tag numbers' 1, 2, 3 etc. were traditionally reserved for the vehicles used by state officials, whilst numbers 4 onwards fell into general circulation.
As in the UK, registrations can be transferred between vehicles and can be sold between individuals. The transfer fee is just $20 in the USA, compared to the £80 levied here.
The Vassall family already own number '9', which they bought at auction for $185,000, and '27.
Why the attraction of these vanity plates? "It's a family thing"
