Credit Crisis Fails To Affect Number Plates Fans
The success of recent number plates auctions shows that the country’s credit crisis has failed to deter number plates fans as sales figures continue to soar at public auctions across the UK.
There has been a stream of notable car registration sales over the last week. Expectations have been shattered as bidders have gone head-to-head over prestigious private number plates. The first big sale was ‘S 1’, which was snapped up at an auction carried out by Bonhams last Sunday. The plate was sold for £404,062.50, a sale surpassed only by ‘F 1’, which was sold this year to businessman Afzal Kahn for £440,625.
A three-day DVLA auction, which began on Wednesday, has also produced much competition from bidders. The most impressive sale so far has been ‘6 B’, which generated a huge amount of interest. Although given a reserve price of £8000, the registration surpassed all expectations, selling for thirteen times that amount. After battle with several keen bidders, the plate was anonymously scooped up for £129,171 by a keen Internet bidder.
The auction concludes today, with the number plate, ‘THE 571G’, which resembles the popular Top Gear driving enigma, The Stig, also expected to do very well.
