The last of the special 'O' registration releases commanded a very respectable price at auction on Friday. The number plate, 8 O was purchased for a total of £69,552 at a DVLA event held at the Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire.

The unusual sequence 1 O to 9 O has been sold one at a time at successive public auctions, but not in strictly numerical order. For some reason 9 O was released early, in March this year, leaving punters to wait for the '7' and '8' variations.

Predictably, it was the premier version, 1 O, which attracted the highest fiscal interest - the new owner parting with £210,242 in return for the privilege - followed by 2 O with a healthy £142,249 price tag.

However, both 6 O and 9 O fared better than their numerical values would suggest, largely because the digits '6' and '9' resemble the letters 'G' and 'g' respectively, allowing the plates to be interpreted as 'GO' or 'go'.

And the latest example, 8 O, still managed to outdo both the lower numbered 3 O and 4 O even though the number '8' can, at best, be construed as a capital 'B' - forming the less impressive 'BO', which may possibly be significant as a nickname to someone.

However, the most entertaining sale was that of 1 TSD. Two contenders battled over the rights to the classic 'number one' plate. The contest reached its spectacular conclusion at a figure of £63,236.

The next of the regular auctions held by the government licensing agency will be at Rudding Park, Harrogate on 5th, 6th, 7th October 2010.
