Massachusetts Uses License Plates To Help Animals
Drivers in Massachusetts, USA, are using their number plates to reveal their love for animals. License plates, which proudly sport the phrase, 'I Love Animals!' reveal motorists' affection for animals, while simultaneously aiding efforts to ease the state's homeless pet problems.
The Massachusetts Animal Coalition (MAC) has revealed that this year's figures for sales of the specialty license plates are very likely to exceed last year's impressive results. In 2007, more than $130,000 was raised and, if expectations are met, 2008's sales will exceed this, resulting in well over $500,000 being raised since the charity's inception in 2004.
Since 2004, more than 6,500 number plates have been sold and all proceeds are granted out by the MAC. All money raised is donated to numerous non-profit animal welfare organisations and city and town animal control departments in the state.
Kara Holmquist, Chairperson for the Massachusetts Animal Coalition License Plate Task Force revealed that approximately 750,000 homeless cats and dogs appear on the streets of Massachusetts each year and said: "Purchasing an 'I'm Animal Friendly!' license plate not only raises money for local humane societies and animal control programmes, but also lets other drivers know that you love animals and care for their well-being."
Many areas of the USA use license plates to raise money, or reveal messages. In Georgia and Minnesota, for example, convicted drunk drivers may be ordered to display a particular series of numbers on their number plates, which reveal restricted driving privileges.
