'99' Plate Takes 7th Place in High-Flier Stakes

More than £6m changed hands in the latest round of personal number plate auctions held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The highest single price paid was £1,116,800 for the number '99'. Apparently, the successful bid also secures the rights to '9', '999', '9999' and '99999' in one job lot.

The sale of '99' goes straight in at number 7 in the chart of all-time best-sellers.

Staggering sums of money were also paid for other registrations in the sale, including:

'26' (£429,538), ' 22222' (£206,178), '31' (£369,403), '68' (£343,630), '53' (£352,221), '42' (£412,537), '720' (£352,221), 151 and 171 (£103,089 each)

Colonel Salem Ali Al Shamsi, director of the Privatisation and Resources Development Department, said; "Arrangements are now being made for holding the sixth electronic auction."

Emirates Auctions; CEO, Abdullah Matar Al Mannai, added; "Auctions of distinguished number plates have attracted a large number of people from inside and outside the country with a number of visitors to the portal of the distinguished number plates of Abu Dhabi Police reaching as many as 36,000 hits from 52 countries".
