It Was a Very Good Year

The introduction of the '59' number plates, on 1st September 2009, will mark the end of of the '50' series of new-style registrations.

Initial delays meant that, instead of starting with 01 in March 2001 as originally planned, the system in fact commenced with '51' in September 2001. It was, therefore, followed by '02' six months later and, consequently, no '50', '00' or '01' plates were ever issued.

Pedants would argue - quite correctly - that the registration decade will conclude with '60' and not '59' - harking back to the the great millienium debacle, when we were persuaded that the 20th century ended on 31 December 1999 rather than a year later.

Nevertheless, the '59-er' is certain to be a noteable plate and bound to take on an added significance for anyone celebrating a very special 50th birthday this year.

In 1959, the dark side of the moon was revealed for the first time, thanks to the Russion Lunar 3 space probe: The M1 motorway opened: Alaska became the 50th of The United States: Buddy Holly died in a plane crash: And the Barbie doll was born!

And most significantly of course, all the 50-year-olds were born.

You can purchase a '59' registration from 2nd June and there could hardly be a more apt gift to commemorate attaining a half-century, either for yourself or a special person in your life.
