Here be Dragons

Doug Ellis with AV 1I really don’t know how we do it, but we have another fantastic issue for you. In fact, it is only modesty that prevents us from pointing out how absolutely unique this magazine is in our industry.

In this issue we are very fortunate to have an interview with businessman and Dragons’ Den regular Theo Paphitis. You may remember that we featured his colleague Duncan Bannatyne last time. Theo has a book coming out in May, so all you aspiring entrepreneurs make a note.

Also featured, is a fascinating interview with former Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis - the proud owner of the registration AV 1.

New Records

It only seems like a few weeks since I was writing about the world record price paid for the number 5 at a United Arab Emirates auction of ‘distinguished number plates’. Hard to believe that a £3.5 million price tag can be old news already, but it is. The same auction house recently sold the ultimate car registration, the number 1, and doubled the world’s highest ever price at a stroke. Shortly before that, a new record was set for the most expensive number plate ever purchased in the UK when businessman Afzal Kahn bought F 1 from Essex County Council. (See full story opposite.)

New Format

We hear from many readers who find the listings of available number plates irresistible. The only negative comment we sometimes receive is that it can be a little difficult to decide where best to look for a particular number.

This issue sees a new layout for the registration listings. We have divided them into clear, discrete sections for Names, Initials, Words and Number 1s. We hope this will make it easier for you to find your perfect registration.

Wedding B3 LLE

Finally, we would like to congratulate our friend Ruby Speechley on her marriage to Richard Pearson, which took place on March 1st in the Fenland market town of March. We wish them every happiness for the future.

Ruby is the author of our book Fanatical About Number Plates and a regular contributor to this magazine. Her interview with football legend Doug Ellis is featured in this issue.
