Dr M G Morris of Dorchester in Dorset is an entomologist whose main field of interest is a group of beetles called weevils.

“All species of insects have a scientific name consisting of two parts, a genus name and a species name.

“In the British fauna there are only two names of genera (plural) which can be expressed in number-plate form: Lixus and Cionus.

Cionus is a genus of weevils, which feed on mulleins and figworts and the group is quite well known to naturalists.

“A friend suggested that I should see if either were available as number plates and my first attempt, with yourselves, showed that C10 NUS was indeed for sale at a very reasonable cost.

“My number plate has caused a great deal of amusement among my entomological friends, but mystification among those who do not know its significance!”
