Private Number Plates Psychedelia..

Brilliant, eh? That was John Lennon's Roller... Not exactly a factory standard paint job, eh? It is a shame that John didn't actually own the the private number plates shown in the illustration - it would have been perfect.

In fact, that 1 LSD registration belongs to Regtransfers - but it is for sale, if any of you Beatles fans fancy it!

Sadly the same is not true of the vehicle itself, which we believe is still in a museum.

The car was originally a far more traditional black, but John tired of that and legend has it that a team of Dutch gypsy artists, known as The Fool, was commissioned to redecorate it. These were the people who painted Eric Clapton's famous Cream-era Gibson SG guitar. They repainted Lennon's Phantom V with the psychedelic design you see in the image above at a reported cost of some £2,000.

That is the legend, however the identity of the person or group responsible is disputed, and other sources credit other artists: one possibility being a gentleman named "Gypsy Dave".

John’s newly painted Rolls drew some unexpected reactions, and one particular lady in London was reportedly so outraged that she beat the car with her umbrella yelling: "You swine! How dare you do this to a Rolls-Royce."

Regtransfers is currently promoting this number plate by way of celebration of the 40th anniversary of the release of The Beatles' classic album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was released on June 1st 1967.

The "LSD" on the number plate is, of course, a reference to the song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' which appeared on the album.
